Well, when you grow up in an unstable world where every attempt at function and solidarity is ripped apart in almost timely fashion, nihilism seems like the obvious choice.

obvious, but not only.
that's the point. we should not strive to what is obvious, for what good is that? the world can be so dire if one chooses that path. life has so much to give beyond the realm of obviousness.
